Storm Windows: Insulate and Save

The argument for storm windows is simple.  The US Department of Energy says they can better insulate your house, thus reducing the heat loss as much as 50%.

Another advantage of replacement storm windows lies in its second layer which provides extra protection.  They reduce the circulation of air out of your windows.  They give you an extra barrier to keep out wind and cold in the winter, and heat in the summer.

Double-track combination units are also available, at less cost. Both types of windows can be purchased practically everywhere.  You can purchase them with installation included or not. Self installation will lower the price at purchase by approximately 15% to 20%.   A screwdriver, caulking gun and drill are necessary for this.  The fit and seal are two of the most important aspects. Most of the time it is easier and smarter to have a professional install windows, even if it is more expensive.

Your supplier will first measure all the windows where you want custom storm windows installed. Then it will usually take a period ranging from several days to several weeks for the supplier to get your order together, return, and install it. Installation should take less than one day, depending on how many windows are involved.

Verify Your Installation

Two very important items should be checked to make sure the installation is properly done.

1 - Make sure that both the window sashes and screen sash move smoothly and seal tightly when closed after installation. If poorly installed, the windows will not be aligned properly.

2 - Be sure there is a tightly caulked seal around the edge of the custom storm windows. You can be sure that both your savings and the performance of your storm windows will erode if there are leaks.
